Kenya Connection
We sell quite a few Pimsleur Swahili Language Courses. I had often wondered who would be buying them. It definitely was not one of our bigger languages but it keeps selling. We also sell Farsi, Haitian Creole, Hindi, Irish, Tagalog, Twi and Ojibwe. But Swahili always intrigued me.
I was meeting with a group of men in London, England. There was one man that stood out from all of the rest. His skin was a chestnut color, white, white teeth, dark eyes and very handsome. He spoke impeccable English. I could not wait to talk with him, find out where he was from, and why he was there.
When at last I was able to make my way through the group and talk with him, I found a very charming man. He was in London on holiday. He was a businessman from Kenya, Africa. I found that Kenya has almost 37 million people and that Nairobi is the capital city with a population of about 3 million. It is a very poor country where a lot of humanitarian work goes on. English is the official language but Swahili is the national language as well as numerous indigenous languages.
Recently a friend went on a picture taking safari to Kenya and had a wonderful time and came back with beautiful pictures of many animals. He also had the opportunity of visiting a humanitarian project. This project was one where the natives gathered up coconuts and made virgin coconut oil for export. He said that it was fascinating. These poor people who are being helped to try and improve their living conditions were in the business of making coconut oil.
Apparently many of the Pimsleur Swahili Language Courses are being used by people traveling to Kenya to do humanitarian projects so they can better communicate with the natives.
Pimsleur has 37 different language courses to choose from.
